Location: Blogs Antonio Mauriello Visiting Italy as a Tourist |
 |

After the success of yesterday afternoon's guided tasting, from my
personal point of view, I wanted to start them as early as I could
today as well. So, I registered for the earliest one right after lunch.
As in Italian streets, here at the show between 1 pm and 2 pm,
everybody is at lunch. The booths are quiet, no business deal can be
closed during lunch time. The only nice "music" you hear all around are
the dishes and espresso cups at the bar.
9 am:
- Stopped at the "Vie Astigiane" booth where I got names and contacts
for my visit to Piemonte in the next few days. "Vie Astigiane" is a
company that promotes "enotourism" (wine tourism) in Piemonte.
- Spoke with a producer (Graglia). Its estate is located near Asti
which I will be visiting in 2 weeks. I tasted some of his products:
Arneis, Barbera and Freisa. I will talk more about these native
Piemonte grapes in my next articles.
11.30 am:
I am attending a guided tasting (which is really a promotional event)
on wines from Campania. This emerging Italian southern region is being
presented to the targeted audience of the national and international
press and buyers. Geographically, Campania is located just south of
Lazio. Its capital, Napoli, is only 200km from Rome and it lies on the
Tirreno sea in a splendid gulf. The entire region features a very good
volcanic land for the vineyards. Campania's volcano "Vesuvio" is still
active (in a dormant state)
1 pm: at the end of the talk and tasting, we was offered a generous buffet with typical products from Campania such as:
Tomatoes, Mozzarella di Bufala (a special juicy-melt-in-your-mouth
tasty mozzarella from Buffalo milk: one of its kind!), salame, roasted
peppers, Baba (a typical pastry) and so on..

The 5 wines tasted during the seminar were selected from each of the 5 provinces of Campania.
1) Province of Napoli: Greco di Tufo 2003 DeFalco 400,000 bottles.
Fruity, light, pleasantly soft. Medium body. With a smoky toasty
finish. My score: 81/100
2) Province of Avellino: Fiano di Avellino 2003 Azienda Dedicato a
Marianna 300,000 bottles. Acidity and aromas are typical of the Fiano.
Minerals and smoky hints. My score: 78/100
3) Province of Benevento: Falanghina 2003 Fattoria La Rivolta100,000
bottles. Very aromatic, with hints of pineapple and sweet flowers. In
part was late harvested. Medium body. Good balance between acidity and
viscosity. Clean and long finish. My score: 84/100
4) Province of Caserta: Taurasi 2000 Cantine Caputo 1,000,000 bottles
Very deep ruby color. Aglianico grape has lots of antocians and dry
extract, therefore lots of color and structure. Cherry, blackberry,
jam, spices, mint. Soft and gently tannic. Balanced and rich. My score:
86/100
5) Province of Salerno: Naima 2001 (Aglianico) Az De Concilis 100,000
bottles 15% alcohol. The bouquet is intense and persistent with notes
of barnyard and leather. The base fruit signature of the Aglianico
grape is very noticeable. Tannic and aggressive. Excellent structure.
Sweet and astringent long finish. My score: 90/100
3 pm - 4 pm
The Chianti Classico area: learn to recognize the Sangiovese comparing it with Cabernet and Merlot in Chianti
The chairman was Daniele Rosellini who is the Director of the Consorzio del Chianti Classico.
Goal: to compare the distinguished color and scents of Sangiovese with
those from Cabernet and Merlot cultivated in the same area of Chianti.
Interesting discussions on the topic.
1) Chianti Classico 2001 Ormanni - Poggibonsi (You can call it Classico if you have at least 85% of Sangiovese).
Typical color of Sangiovese: light ruby, with brick tones. Fruity, cherry jam, plums.
warm, tannic, bitterish finish. My score: 82/100
2) Cignale 2001 Castello di Queceto Greve in Chianti 90% cab 10% Merlot.
Purple, pepper, vegetable notes. Vanilla, toasty from new barrique (20
months). Toasty and balanced. Tannins are evident. Long sweet finish.
87/100
3) Monile Fattoria Viticcio 2000 Cab Petit Verdaux (perhaps) The
bouquet is intense and persistent. Complex variety of red fruit with
strong spicy notes. Tannins are also strong however plesant, not too
aggressive. My score: 90/100
4) Mammolo 2000 Merlot 100% Cennatoio, Panzano in Chianti. Matured in tonneau ( a medium sized oak barrel).
Floreal, spicy. Woods from barrique is well evident. Almonds in the aftertaste. My score: 86/100
5) Chianti Classico Brucegna 2000 Castello La Leccia Castellina in
Chianti mint, leather and wet fur (since it is older than the first
Chianti). Tannic and fresh with a pleasant long finish. High dry
extract, full body. Young. My score: 85/100
6) Merlot 100% Castellara di Castellina. Very young modern vineyard.
Fewer plants per hectar. Low yields. High concentration of color.
Complex bouquet: berries, violets, ethereal. Tannic and warm. Liquorice
notes. Long finish. Very young. 86/100
5 pm
Tastings at "I Vini dell'Anno" booth from "Associazione Italiana Sommelier"
At the second floor of the first pavilion, there are also 4 big booths
where the Italian Sommelier Association presents an on-going event
named: "I migliori vini dell'anno (The best wines of the year),
recognized annually in their guide. The booths are called "I Vini
dell'Anno" and you can participate to the so called "Degustazioni
libere" which basically means: "Go and taste whenever you want (for a
small charge).
So, whenever I have a spare 15-30 minutes, I come here, try new wines and take notes.
These are today's picks:
1) Casali Viticultori Frizzante 2003 12% Colli di Scandiano e di Canosa
Nice intense strawberry color. Bubbles are many, with a fine grain but
not persistent. Light intensity at the nose. Mud, muschio. Light body.
My score: 74/100
2) Gutturnio Frizzante Podere Casale
