The tortuous high hills south of Piacenza.
Taro Valley:
Not a good night last night... Nothing to say against the hotel where I
slept... or trying to... Unfortunatelly the hotel was located near a
truck stop. Hundreds of trucks were maneuvering all night long..
I woke up very early and I also left early...
The hills of Colli Piacentini are ahead of me. So are nice towns such
as Vigoleno, which features one of the best looking and best preserved
castles I have seen so far. Colli Piacentini is known for the vicinity
to Piemonte and Lombardia, which influence land and people. For example
here we find the Barbera grape, usually blended with other local grapes
like Bonarda to make the Gutturnio DOC, or blended with Cabernet, or
even "in purezza" (100% Barbera).
I passed by La Tosa where the owners were not available. Better luck at
La Stoppa. Located at the end of a steep country road, the estate
welcomes you with a characteristic house facade with many vineyards all
around it. I spent a productive and interesting 3 hours with Sonia who
led me through the estate, its cellars and she also opened a few
bottles for tasting.
Afterward, I took the road directed to Val Tidone and I stopped at
Azienda Il Poggiarello where I could not find anybody to greet me. I
then decided to call it a day.
To find a place to sleep was not easy. I passed by few towns where
accommodations were all taken for one reason or another. For example,
in one town (Pianello Val Tidone) there was a music competition, so
everything was full. I found something a few km north in Castel San
Giovanni, a small village located near the border with Lombardia in the
"Oltrepo Pavese" area, also well known for one of the best Italian
"spumante" .
Wines of La Stoppa
For this tasting I have used the following scoring system:
O=Olfatto (nose)
G=Gusto (taste)
F=Finish
Numbers go from 1(the lowest score) to 5 (the highest)
Prices are at the stores in Euro (1 Euro is almost equivalent to 1 US$)
1) Ageno 2002
Trebbiano, Malvasia 13.5% alcohol
Macerated with the skins and refined in casks. Not bad for a white! The
result is a nice golden yellow color, good structure and a bit of
tannins! The final is a bit bitter.
Euro 9, O4 G4 F2.5
2) Colli Piacentini Gutturnio 2003
Barbera 60%, Bonarda 40%
Euro 8, O3 G3 F2.5
3) Colli Piacentini Barbera della Stoppa 2000
Barbera 100%
Euro 13, O3 G4 F4
4) Macchiona 2000
Rosso IGT Barbera 50%, Bonarda 50%
Produced similarly to Gutturnio, however the selection of Barbera
during harvest is more accurate for the Macchiona than for the other
wines.
Ripe red fruit and black pepper on the nose.
Euro 15, O3 G4.5 F3.5
5) Colli Piacentini Cabernet Sauvignon Stoppa 2000
Rosso DOC Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot
Black pepper, vanilla, grass and green pepper the smelling notes. Complex and long finish.
Euro 19, O4 G3 F4
6) Colli Piacentini Malvasia Passito Vigna del Volta 2002
A meditation wine! An intense and persistent bouquet with notes of
dates, vanilla and honey prepares you to a strong impact in the mouth
and a long long finish.
Euro 16 (0.500 lt), O4.5 G4 F5
