The GWL - Day 3A new promising DOCG in the wine region of Marche: Vernaccia di Serrapetrona.

A "take-it-easy" morning...!

I woke up at 9 am and hit the road at 10.00. After a short 10 km drive up to the mountain, I reached the first of the producers I wanted to visit in this area of the Vernaccia di Serrapetrona.

Azienda Serboni

A very small producer with lots of energy. The family house hosts the cellar, the production floor and a small store where I had the tasting.

It is 10am and I still have the taste of cappuccino in my mouth. However, the pungent and tickling bubbles of the Vernaccia red spumante made me forget the cappuccino! I think I have already mentioned that I spit every wine I taste. The only time when I don't do it is during meals. And I also tend to limit my wine consumed at meal time to 1-2 glasses. I wanted to clarify this, just in case you think that I will return home with a drinking problem!

Azienda Alberto Quacquarini.

The best greeting I had so far. I was welcomed by Alberto himself who led the tasting and drove me with his 4x4 to visit his land. Vineyards, vineyards and vineyards are everywhere in these hills. I visited the cellars, had all the machinery explained and visited the new building where the grapes are dried to make the Passito.

Alberto makes a very good wine: Petronio which is an Amarone-like wine, structured and with a perfect balanced. Tannins and softness given by the aging time in oak barrique. This 100% Vernaccia has the typical elegant aroma of violet and blackberry and an ample jam and spicy bouquet.

13:00 I am having lunch, right now, in the piazza of the stony village of Serrapetrona embedded i n the mountains like a gem. My fettuccine with mushrooms and truffles are filling the air with perfumes. The wine is a Dry Vernaccia which is a little weak to match this plate. Though, the sparkling bubbles and the acidity clean the mouth fairly well and leave a pleasant aftertaste.

Time for a double espresso, since I will be on the road this afternoon.

Short drive: in 45 minutes I went from the mountain to the sea. The Adriatic Sea will be on my right hand side for the next few days, since I will be diving north. I am curious to see how the salty air of this small sea affects the grapes and wines.

16:00 I am in Civitanova Marche right now in the DOC area of Colli Maceratesi and Rosso Piceno. However, I am relaxing in one of the many beaches. I am looking towards the sea (east) and the sun is behind me, setting behind the mountains. This is awkward for me since I grew up on the west coast of Italy where it is exactly the opposite. I have to say, though, that it is much nicer on the other coast. I love watching the sun diving in the water on the horizon.

Afterwards, I went to the Boccadigabbia Estate. Didn't taste anything because the owner was not there. This small estate produces a great 100% Cabernet called Akronte which was a winner in many competitions. Its cost at the cellar is E30.

Moving few km north, I arrive at the Monte Conero promontory. Monte Conero is an incredible spot. It is one of the only 2 rocky spots in the entire Italian Adriatic coast. All the rest of the coast is sand.

I decided to spend the night in Numana, a smiling village at the foot of Monte Conero. I have a splendid view of the promontory from my hotel room. In this moment, I am writing these final notes of the day and I am listening to the sound of the waves. I was born with this sound. And I was almost forgetting how beautiful it is...
